Jeri Ryan prefers playing Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Picard over Voyager

Jeri Ryan has been keeping fans in the loop about production on the second season of Star Trek: Picard. Per TrekMovie.com, she confirmed on Twitter that the original filming start date of February 1 has been pushed back, but that shooting will start “soon.” Not only does the show have to deal with the COVID-19 protocols so many other shows are facing, it has the added challenge of protecting the health and safety of star Sir Patrick Stewart, who is 80 years old and a bona fide galactic treasure.

Stewart received his first COVID-19 vaccination on January 22, so depending on the length of the delay it could give him time to get the second shot ahead of filming resuming.

Jeri Ryan is happy to return as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard

Ryan has been using the extra time to engage with fans about her role as Seven of Nine, a role she originated on Star Trek: Voyager. And she’s only one of several Trek veterans who have reprised their roles on Picard.

So which version of the character did Ryan like playing better? Responding to a fan on Twitter, it sounds like she’s having a better time on Star Trek: Picard:

What makes playing Seven on Picard a better experience? She may have given us a clue when speaking on the official Picard podcast last year. “[T]he hardest part of playing Seven back in the Voyager years was because she couldn’t really express emotion and I am very emotional and very expressive!” Ryan said. On Picard, the character has grown a lot, and Ryan has a lot more chance to explore her emotions.

Picard is opening up opportunities for cast members from across the Star Trek Universe to come back and play in the sandbox again, so it’s not surprising to hear that Ryan is having more fun now than she did before. Hopefully production will begin soon because fans are eager to know what happens in season 2.
