Gwendoline Christie hypes her role in The Sandman, and more celeb news

Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) is all set to wreak havoc as the Ruler of Hell, aka Lucifer, in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. Perhaps one of the most beloved graphic novels of all time, The Sandman tells the story of Morpheus, a personification of Dream.

Morpheus is part of a family of beings known as the Endless, siblings represent different parts of the human condition — his brothers and sisters include Death, Destiny, Delirium (formerly Delight), Desire, Despair and Destruction. His world includes legendary creatures like Lucifer, a role that Christie should be able to knock out of the park.

I know some are a little disappointed that the role didn’t go to Tom Ellis, who plays Lucifer on The CW’s Lucifer (Ellis’ character is technically the same Lucifer from The Sandman), but I couldn’t be more excited to see what Christie with the part. And based on her recent Instagram post, she’s all ready to go!

Moving on to other Game of Thrones veterans, back in September, Deadline reported on a movie called Twist — a reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic Oliver Twist — starring Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) as Sikes. The all-star cast includes Sir Michael Caine (The Dark Knight) as Fagin, Rita Ora (50 Shades of Grey trilogy) as Dodge, Franz Drameh (Legends of Tomorrow) as Batesey, Sophie Simnett (Daybreak) as Red and Raff Law (son of Jude Law and Sadie Frost ) as Oliver Twist himself.

Headey posted a little spot for her character on her Instagram:

Oliver Twist tells the story of an orphan growing up in London’s underworld and highlights Dickens’ belief that poverty leads to crime. In Dickens’ novel, Headey’s character Sikes is male, but the reimagining will put a twist (get it?) on this rowdy and dangerous character.

For those that haven’t read this story, Sikes is a criminal in Fagin’s (the antagonist of the story) gang, as well as a robber and murderer. This type of role is right up Headey’s alley — she did play Cersei Lannister, after all.

Twist was released on Sky Cinema on January 29.

Gwendoline Christie and Lena Headey aren’t the only ones with movies and television shows coming out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones alum Joel Fry — who played Daenerys Targaryen’s short-lived husband Hizdahr zo Loraq — will be starring in the adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion alongside Succession star Sarah Snook.

If you don’t remember, Hizdahr zo Loraq was one of the Great Masters of Meereen. He worked with Daenerys to save the city, but she imprisoned him and the other Masters following the death of Ser Barristan Selmy. Hizdahr gets a reprieve when Daenerys decides to marry him as a way to pacify the populace, but his days are numbered as he’s soon murdered by the Sons of Harpy.

In Persuasion, Fry will play Frederick Wentworth, a wealthy war captain who returns to England after an auspicious tour abroad. There’s no release as of yet.

He’s also starring in Disney’s live-action Cruella as Jasper Badun, one of Cruella’s evil henchmen. The movie is set to premiere on Disney+ on May 28, 2021. Death has been good to Hizdahr
