Amazon Prime Video is currently readying its fabulously expensive Lord of the Rings show, while will be set thousands of years before the story we know, during the Second Age of Middle-earth.
Naturally, that has some fans wondering what the cast and crew of Peter Jackson’s original three Lord of the Rings films are thinking. Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in those movies, gave his take to GQ. “Yeah, I’m interested to see what they do,” he said. “They’ve been shooting that in New Zealand. is a good director, so it’ll probably be worth watching.”
"I’ll be curious to see what they do, how they interpret Tolkien. I don’t know how much the Tolkien estate has allowed them to use."
Before signing onto the Lord of the Rings show, Bayona directed episodes of Penny Dreadful as well as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
What is Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show about?
As for how they’ll interpret Tolkien, the show is in an interesting place. A lot happened during the Second Age, but much of it is spread out over a very long period of time, so unless the cast is made up entirely of immortal Elves, they’ll have to pick their moments.
Speaking of the cast, it’s really big. Some characters we know, like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), but we can assume that others will be invented.
The show did have a Tolkien scholar working on it, but it’s reportedly parted ways with him. Take that how you will.
In any case, if all goes well, we should be watching Amazon’s Lord of the Rings show come 2022.
