A Negan-centric spin-off could join the growing number of new shows poised to replace The Walking Dead when AMC’s flagship zombie series bows out in 2022. Even TWD star Jeffrey Dean Morgan is hinting at possibilities for his character after the show ends, although he has to see The Walking Dead through to its conclusion first.
The Walking Dead has taken some creative liberties with its source material, choosing to follow some stories from Robert Kirkman’s comic book more closely than others. The departure of actors like Andrew Lincoln, whose character Rick Grimes is a mainstay throughout, necessitated a few changes to the show.
The same is true of Negan. Kirkman wrote an entire backstory for the character in a special edition comic book titled Here’s Negan. That story will come to life in one of The Walking Dead bonus episodes coming in late February, but fans have always wanted to know even more about the former leader of the Saviors.
Negan has always seemed to have a lot of room to grow, which is why fans have always wanted a Negan spin-off. Jeffrey Dean Morgan seems to be on board for the possibility.
The Walking Dead could lead to a Negan spin-off, per Jeffrey Dean Morgan
TWD fans know that Morgan loves to engage with fans on social media, so they frequently ask him questions and he answers with as much honesty as he can (or as much as the NDAs he’s signed will allow).
During a recent conversation with fans about how rough it will be to see The Walking Dead come to an end, a fan asked Morgan about the possibility of a Negan spin-off, and he left the door open:
There are a lot of Walking Dead spin-offs already in development, including one focusing on Carol and Daryl and Tales of The Walking Dead, an anthology series. These will launch after TWD ends in 2022, and will join current spin-offs Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. And then there are the upcoming Rick Grimes movies.
Given AMC’s commitment to developing the franchise into something bigger than it already is, there’s every reason to believe that a Negan spin-off is possible.
For now, though, Morgan is focused on the final 30 episodes of the show and seeing The Walking Dead through to what will surely be an epic conclusion.
