Rumor: Sony offers Keanu Reeves the role of Kraven the Hunter
By Dan Selcke
Marvel has its Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros. the DC Extended Universe. Meanwhile, Sony is making a shared superhero universe of movies using characters from the Spider-Man comics, including Venom — who has a new movie coming out on June 25 — and Morbius the Living Vampire, who gets his own movie on January 21 of next year. And that’s on top of the third Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, which Sony is coproducing with Marvel; that one’s out on December 17.
And if Sony has its way, this is just the beginning. We’ve heard about them making movies about characters like Madame Web and Silk, and now, The Illuminerdi reports that the studio has offered the role of Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter to geek luminary Keanu Reeves, the star of The Matrix and John Wick movie series and one of the hottest properties in Hollywood, especially among superhero movie producers. I mean, seriously, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said that they talk to Reeves “for almost every film we make.” That’s how much they want Neo. “I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it”
It was rumored Disney was interested in Reeves playing the lead in their upcoming Moon Knight series, although that role eventually went to Oscar Isaac. It’s nice to be in demand.
We don’t know if Reeves will actually accept the role, but it’s in everybody’s best interest he do, because it would be pretty funny to see him don spotted jungle pants.
Who is Kraven the Hunter?
Kraven the Hunter, for the record, is a super-powered big-game hunter who wants to bag Spider-Man to prove he’s the best. Yes, Spider-Man is a human being, not game, but that’s why Kraven is a villain.
That said, the character has occasionally been on the more antihero side of things, just like Venom and Morbius; it makes sense that Sony would want to fashion movies for characters like that rather than outright villains, although Warner Bros. proved that you could have a successful villain movie with Joker. There’s still lots of time.
This rumor is not confirmed, but we rate it as pretty fun.
