Rick and Morty creator making new animated show set in ancient Greece

Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is one busy guy! Not only is he hard at work on the fifth season of Rick and Morty, but he was also one of the minds behind Solar Opposites, an animated series about an alien family stranded on earth, which premiered on Hulu in May 2020. And now, The Hollywood Reporter has it that Harmon is in the process of making an animated series for Fox Entertainment set in ancient Greece.

The new show, which is due to arrive in 2022, will center around a mixed family of humans, gods and monsters as they attempt to operate one of humanity’s first cities. I’m curious about the inclusion of the word “mythical” in the description of ancient Greece. I’m hoping that means that the show will include legendary creatures like centaurs, chimeras, giants and other beings from Greek myth. And there are lots of gods who could show up, including Zeus, Hades, Aphrodite and Hera just to name a few.

Where will the new show fit with Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites?

While Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites are different shows, they do share a similar tone, setting and comedic style. Both series feature intergalactic and outlandish misadventures that force the characters to adapt to survive. The primary difference is that while Rick and Morty are usually galavanting on another world, the blended alien family in Solar Opposites must contend with the social expectations that come along with living in the suburbs on Earth.

Both Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites feature futuristic technology, so I’m wondering how Dan Harmon will fare without that to lean on…unless he wants to just bring it in anyway.

“Leave it to Dan Harmon to turn the mythos of early Greek civilization into remarkably sharp commentary on today’s politics, celebrity and pop culture,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “This project is an incredibly irreverent family comedy as told by one of the town’s most inventive storytellers. We are proud to be partnered with Dan on this series, which strengthens our hold on the animation space and, as we continue to build Fox Entertainment, marks an important first step for us with our first fully owned scripted property.”

I can’t wait to see what this new show has to offer!
