WandaVision has had fans buzzing since its premiere, but the surprise appearance of Evan Peters as Quicksilver, aka Pietro Maximoff, at the end of the last episode sent it into overdrive. This version of Quicksilver — Wanda’s brother — comes from the Fox-owned X-Men universe, which has never crossed over with the MCU before. (The MCU version was played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson.) According to WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer, a lot of work went into making the cameo possible.

The idea came about early, but thinking it and doing it were two very different things. “We loved the idea of [bringing him back],” Schaeffer told Marvel.com. “And then we were like, how in the world are we going to make this make logical sense? Like, how do we justify this? Because that’s the thing, you can hatch a million great ideas, but to make them land, to make them be grounded, to make them feel organic to the larger story.”

"This show is such a mind scramble, and because it’s working on so many levels, and there’s so many notions of what’s real and what’s not, and performance, and casting, and audience, and fandom, and all of that, we just thought it would be the biggest thrill to bring Evan over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Peters himself was up for this stunt from the jump, but it can tricky to get all of the rights issues squared away, although it’s surely easier since Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019. As for Marvel boss Kevin Feige, he just wanted to make sure it had purpose, particularly because the implications of bringing in the Fox version of the character are so great. “Kevin wanted to make sure that there was a reason for it, that it made sense,” Schaeffer said. “And I hope that’s what we did.”

What exactly is the reason for it? That has yet to be unveiled. It could be taken as a sign of more interaction between the MCU and Fox’s X-Men universe to come. It seems like Quicksilver’s appearance is a watershed moment for Marvel Studios and that everything could soon change, but first Quicksilver’s story in WandaVision must be told.

Evan Peters was always open for a surprise WandaVision appearance

Peters, who played Quicksilver in three X-Men movies, is a big fan, and Shaeffer says that he was game from the start. “Evan was always up for it – like, always, always, always. He is a comic book fan, and a Marvel fan. He is always up for the absolute weirdest option.”

It sounds like Peters’ appearance in Episode 5 is more than just a cameo; he will also appear in the February 12 episode when the series takes a Full House turn and Quicksilver steps into the “cool uncle” role.

With the door now seemingly open for crossovers between 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios, and given the mind-bending nature of WandaVision thus far, anything could happen. Who knows, the next cameo could be from Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a long-lost twin, or a TV repairman…
