Game of Thrones ended in 2019, far too early for a reboot or a revival…you would think. But with Hollywood racing to revive or reboot just about everything — did you hear that HBO Max is making a Scooby Doo origin story for Velma and bringing back Clone High? — it’s not impossible.
And according to a new study put out by CordCutting.com, which explores streaming media in America and beyond, there are a lot of fans who would welcome it. CordCutting surveyed 900 U.S. adults about their favorite shows and which ones they’d like to see revived. Of the series included in their chart, Game of Thrones was the only show where there was more support for a proper reboot than a continuation:
So 36% of fans surveyed would support a reboot of Game of Thrones with the story being told from scratch. Meanwhile, 18% are down for a revival with the original players, 18% would be happy either way, and 27% don’t think it should be touched.
It’s interesting that nearly three-fourths of fans already want some kind of new Game of Thrones content, whether it’s a revival or a reboot. In fact, fans for pretty much all of these shows want them to come back; the only exception is M*A*S*H, the hugely popular Korean War sitcom from the ’70s. Literally no one wanted that one to come back. And the fact that M*A*S*H is on here at all probably tells you something about the age of the survey recipients; when they say they interviewed U.S. adults, they mean it.
Why do Game of Thrones fans want a reboot rather than a revival?
As for respondents wanting a Game of Thrones reboot over a revival, I imagine it has something to do with the ending, which was controversial to say the least. Perhaps some of these folk are imagining someone taking another crack at it?
All that said, this talk is mostly moot because we’re not likely to get a reboot or a revival of Game of Thrones for a while. But there are several follow-up shows on the way:
