Lovecraft Country team working on a second season

Lovecraft Country was one of the most interesting new shows of 2020, a blistering adaptation of Matt Ruff’s book of the same name that combined far-out sci-fi and horror concepts with unblinking looks at American racial prejudice. But like a few other recent HBO hits — e.g. Watchmen and The Outsider — it didn’t seem like a second season was in the cards.

But apparently it is! Speaking to Deadline, HBO chief content chief Casey Bloys gave an update on where things are:

"[Showrunner Misha Green] is working with a small team of writers and they’re coming up with a take. She had a book to go on in the first season, she and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Mischa, so we’re giving them the time to work."

And the first season of Lovecraft Country did sort of call for a second season. There were a few cliffhangers, including the fate of Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) and Dee’s (Jada Harris) newly discovered talent for murder, with the help of her handy-dandy robot arm. The first season was bursting at the seams with ideas, so I’d be curious to see where a second would go.

HBO is also working on another season of True Detective

And Lovecraft Country isn’t the only HBO property on track to return. There have been three seasons of True Detective so far, each telling a different creepy crime story. The third would have been as good a place as any to end things, but according to Bloys, the network has plans to try and continue that as well:

"It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take. It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it."

Getting a “new voice,” likely means that original writer Nic Pizzolatto won’t be involved. He had his ups (seasons 1 and 3) and his downs (season 2), so we’ll call it a wash and welcome some new blood.
