Zack Snyder is being talked about a lot lately. With his R-rated, 4-hour cut of Justice League on the horizon, as well as zombie heist movie Army of the Dead, he’s clearly a really busy guy. But once these big movies premiere, he’ll have more time to pursue other plans. Apparently, one of those plans is to make a “faithful retelling” of the Arthurian legend.

The director talked about the idea to I Minutemen: “I’m working on something but we’ll see. I’ve been thinking about some kind of retelling, like, [a] real sort of faithful retelling of that Arthurian mythological concept. We’ll see. Maybe that will come at some point.”

Do we really need another King Arthur story, even from Zack Snyder?

Zack Snyder is a super talented filmmaker who could create something cool, but do we really need another retelling of the King Arthur story? Surely it’s oversaturated by this point, with plenty of movies, TV shows, games, novels, comics and plays to choose from.

In 1963, Disney adapted The Sword in the Stone from The Once and Future King, a classic Arthurian novel by T. H White. More recently, Guy Ritchie made King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, a box office flop. Only last year Netflix’s Cursed brought the Arthurian legend to TV. And there have been a lot more. When does it become too much?

Furthermore, he deems his retelling “faithful,” although doesn’t specify exactly what he’s remaining faithful to. There are many different interpretations of Arthurian legend to draw from. Does he mean there will be no enormous elephants like there were in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword? It remains to be seen.

I’m very interested to see what Snyder could come up with. He’s no stranger to historical storytelling having already directed 300, an adaptation of the comics by Frank Miller.

Interestingly, Snyder has already referred to Arthurian legend in his movies, albeit loosely. In Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Thomas and Martha Wayne are killed on Crime Alley after leaving a theater viewing of John Boorman’s 1981 classic Excalibur.

It might be a while before we see Zack Snyder’s take on Arthurian legend. It might not ever happen. In the meantime, his much-anticipated cut of Justice League is due to premiere on HBO Max on March 18. After that, he takes us to the zombie apocalypse with Army of the Dead, coming to Netflix later this year.
