Brilliant, bad, and a little bit mad encompasses the feel of Cruella, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians spin-off starring Emma Stone. After releasing a single image of Stone’s take on the iconic villain at 2019’s D23, we finally have a full-length trailer.

The movie will tell the story of the title character before the 1961 animated film. It’s safe to say Cruella is amongst one of the most hated Disney villains because of her apathy and hatred toward dogs, which will get her on just about anybody’s bad side.

Stone, on the other hand, is America’s sweetheart, and hasn’t played this kind of evil role in the past. But she makes evil look great here. I didn’t know Stone had it in her but color me impressed. Not only does she play bad so well, but she’s sporting a thick London accent that has me, at least, convinced.

What is Disney’s Cruella about?

As summarized by Disney itself, Cruella is “about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil.” As Deadline reports, the movie takes place in the 1970s against the backdrop of the punk rock movement in London. From the costumes to Stone’s attitude in the trailer, it’s punk rock all over.

The movie will follow a young female swindler named Estella, who has a knack for fashion and a taste for getting in trouble. Along the way, she teams up with two thieves as they build their lives together on the streets of London. Estella’s shenanigans one day catch the eye of the Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), and it sets in motion the events that will eventually transform Estella into the wicked, evil Cruella.

Cruella is directed by I Tonya’s Craig Gillespie and executive produced by Stone alongside Glenn Close, who starred as the titular villain back in the 1996 live-action film. The movie is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2021.
