Watch the first footage from Amazon’s The Wheel of Time show
By Dan Selcke
Amazon is hard at work on a show based on The Wheel of Time, a 14-book strong fantasy series from Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, who finished writing the epic after Jordan passed in 2007. It’s one of the most influential and popular modern fantasy series but it’s never gotten an adaptation…or at least, not a good one. Amazon is looking to change that.
Amazon has been leaking out little snippets of the show over the past several months — we’ve gotten script excerpts, concept art, and a look at important props. In that vein, today’s new video gives us a look at the ruby-hilted dagger that causes so much trouble for main character
Matrim Cauthon (and a lot of other people) throughout the series. The difference is that this actually looks like footage from the show itself, which is a first. Take a look:
What is the significance of the ruby-hilted dagger in The Wheel of Time?
Mat, who’s played by Barney Harris on the show, is a rogue-ish type who often provides the story’s comic relief, at least early on. Partway through the first book, The Eye of the World, our group of adventures is forced to hide out in the ruined, haunted city of Shadar Logoth. Mat goes exploring and finds this dagger, which he is very much not supposed to touch, let alone smuggle out of the city. But Mat’s not much for rules, with disastrous results.
We also hear a line of dialogue from (I assume) Mat: “Alright, let’s make a deal.” I don’t remember him saying that in this scene in particular, but it’s been a while since I’ve read the book and it does sound like something he’d say. Mat’s always wheeling and dealing about one thing or another.
The advance looks at this show are getting more and more detailed. Hopefully, we’ll be able to watch a proper Wheel of Time trailer before too long.
