The second season of Star Trek: Picard finally beings shooting
By Dan Selcke
The first season of Star Trek: Picard aired last year, and fans enjoyed catching up with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) after all this time. Unfortunately, the show was hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic — when your star is 80 years old and you’re dealing with a disease especially dangerous to the elderly, even careful precautions may not be enough.
Production on season 2 was originally supposed to start in June of 2020, but that was pushed back to January of this year, and then February. Now, cast member Michelle Hurd (Raffi) has shared an image showing that the team is finally back at it:
With a vaccine going around and studios having gotten a handle on how to shoot during the pandemic — I mean, The Walking Dead somehow managed to film six extra episodes during this period — hopefully things go smoothly from here on out.
No one’s more eager to make more Star Trek: Picard than Patrick Stewart himself
Speaking to Gold Derby in early January, Stewart sounded like he was itching to get back into the thick of things. “This downtime is the longest period [without work] in my career – but in the last couple of weeks I have been called to the studio for wardrobe costume fittings,” he said. “I woke up both of those mornings that I had to drive myself to Santa Clarita so excited that I was attending a wardrobe session! It wasn’t the same as walking in front of the camera and having to act a role, but the wheels were beginning to turn again and I felt so good.”
"And now I have got five scripts of the show and different drafts of those scripts. I spend hours every day with them… I want to work! That is what I am here for, that is what I do. I want a script in my hand. I want actors in front of me. I want to hear somebody say, “Standby studio!” It’s going to happen and it’s within view now. I actually think the first couple of days might be a bit challenging because of how do we tune back into what we were doing back before. But we have such an extraordinary cast and these people will bring it and they’ll just hand it over to me."
We don’t know exactly when Star Trek: Picard season 2 will start airing, but hopefully that enthusiasm shows up onscreen.
