Brent Spiner (Data) sees a future for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The prolific actor understands the magic and allure of Star Trek after spending decades with the franchise and after appearing in the first season of Star Trek: Picard, and he’s not slowing down.

Spiner made his debut on TNG when the show premiered in 1987. His genre-defining role as the android Data afforded him the chance to play a character who was not human but longed to be, like a real-life Pinocchio.

TNG ran from 1987 to 1994 and is still heralded as one of the best series in the franchise because of how well it stands up, both in its storytelling and visual effects. Could a reboot be in its future?

Brent Spiner sees a Star Trek: The Next Generation movie rebooted with younger actors

Speaking to SyFy Wire, Spiner revealed that he sees the future of TNG on the big screen. “I’ve loved the recent movies,” he said, referring to the three Star Trek movies that rebooted the original series and created a world where those stories could continue. “I think that sooner or later, they’re going to do a reboot, a motion picture version of Next Generation, and cast some young guys in our parts.”

That means that Data would be played by someone else, something Spiner has no problem with. “I look forward to seeing it. I think it would be cool if they spun our show off.”

TNG has a timeless appeal thanks to the original cast, but the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D has many stories left to tell. A rebooted movie franchise could be the perfect solution, giving the TNG crew the same ability to reinvent itself for new generations of fans that the cast of the Original Series did.

Spiner has a new book coming October 5 that’s sure to delight Star Trek fans as he reflects on his life and career. Fan-Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events is available for pre-order now.
