Classic lost Doctor Who episode coming to BBC and AMC+
By Ariba Bhuvad
Doctor Who is the franchise that keeps on giving. The latest gift is a lost episode from Patrick Troughton’s run as the Second Doctor (1966-1969). Originally airing in six parts in 1968, “Fury From The Deep” was restored from what scraps survived, with animation filling out the edges. According to the BBC, “No full episodes of this story exist within the BBC archives, and only snippets of footage and still images are still around to represent the story. However, off-air recordings of the soundtrack do exist, making the animation of a complete serial possible once again.”
We first heard about the “Fury From the Deep” during a panel at London Comic-Con in 2019, back when cons were still a thing. We even got a trailer:
This particular arc involves the TARDIS landing off the coast of England. The Second Doctor and his two companions — Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling) — are taken prisoner after being tranquilized. They soon discover that they’ve accidentally trespassed on a refinery base where a parasitic seaweed is releasing a poisonous gas/foam into the air and controlling people’s minds.
It really doesn’t get more classic Doctor Who than that, folks!
Where and when can you watch the lost Doctor Who episode?
“Fury From The Deep” can be watched in its entirety (all six half-hour episodes) on BBC America on March 21, but folks with a subscription to AMC+ can watch it on March 15.
Boy, they are really pushing folks to use AMC+, aren’t they? I’ve noticed that The Walking Dead has been trying to utilize the channel’s premium streaming service by offering episodes early, and now Doctor Who fans are being enticed to do the same. Clever strategy, AMC, I’ll give you that.
If you’re a Whovian like me, you may also want your hands on a physical copy of “Fury From The Deep” which you can preorder from Amazon UK or Amazon Canada.
