No, the Big Hero 6 characters aren’t joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The other day, The DisInsider reported that characters from Big Hero 6 — the 2014 Disney movie about a group of STEM-loving superheroes — would be making their live-action debuts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It wasn’t the craziest rumor we’d ever heard; Big Hero 6 began life as an obscure Marvel comic in the late ’90s before making the jump to the big screen and then to a TV series on the Disney Channel, which just wrapped up after three seasons. Maybe it was time for the characters to move on to a new chapter?

The only thing is, they’re getting a chapter in the form of an animated series on Disney+ called Baymax! — so named for the big cuddly robot at the center of the movie who becomes the best friend of protagonist Hiro Hamada. Variety has confirmed that the characters will not be appearing in the MCU, however fun that might be.

The characters from Big Hero 6 may join the MCU someday, but not this day…

Even though it started life as a Marvel comic, so far as Disney is concerned, Big Hero 6 belongs to the family of movies that includes Wreck-It RalphMoanaFrozen and the upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon. If the Big Hero 6 crowd is going to cross over with anyone, it’ll be folk from those movies…

…at least for now. Big Hero 6 does slot pretty naturally into the MCU, so maybe Disney will come around to the idea in time, especially if the Big Hero 6 franchise remains profitable.
