Jon Favreau breaks down the Krayt Dragon battle from The Mandalorian

The second season of The Mandalorian featured some jaw-dropping special effects. Watch Jon Favreau reveal how the Krayt Dragon came to be.

The second season of The Mandalorian premiered late last year, and fans were overjoyed to have Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda/Grogu back on their screens again. Season 2 featured some wonderful guest appearances from Star Wars characters like Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison), Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

The most recent season also introduced viewers to other worldly creatures like the Krayt Dragon. You can see a skeleton of a Krayt Dragon in A New Hope, but series creator Jon Favreau decided to bring the beast to life for the second season premiere of The Mandalorian.

The episode, “The Marshal,” revolves around Din Djarin and the Child heading to Mos Pelgo, a small town on the planet Tatooine, in order to locate other Mandalorians. Instead of finding his cohorts, Din Djarin finds Cobb Vanth, who has purchased beskar armor in order to defend his town from the Sand People. Vanth agrees to hand over the beskar if Mando helps him kill the Krayt Dragon, which menaces his village and the Sand People alike.

Creating such an enormous creature was no easy feat. The sequences with the Krayt Dragon required digital sand, CGI elements, and footage filmed around the world. Below, Favreau talks about what went into bringing this creature to life:

Favreau also talks a bit about saving that Luke Skywalker cameo for the season 2 finale. Somehow they managed to keep that a secret the whole time. Kudos.

It’s so cool to hear about how The Mandalorian is made! Here’s hoping that we’ll be seeing new episodes sooner rather than later. The first two seasons of the show are currently available to stream with a subscription to Disney+.
