Final season of The Walking Dead will have “a lot of new characters”

The eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead is officially in production. Some fans would argue that the show has outstayed its welcome, but I’ll admit I’m feeling a bit emotional about saying goodbye.

Luckily, the series finale is still a while away. First we have six extra episodes of The Walking Dead season 10 to watch, which start this weekend. Then there’s the 24-episode final season. So there’s a total of 30 new episodes headed our way, so anyone getting choked up, don’t worry, we’ve got a ways to go yet.

Speaking to Digital Spy, showrunner Angela Kang said fans can expect “a lot of new characters” in season 11. What characters might these be? If I had to guess, a lot of them will come from the Commonwealth, the new community that took Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), King Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and Princess (Paola Lázaro) into custody at the end of season 10.

"There will be a lot more story that comes in season 11 where we’ll meet a lot of new characters, but this will start that train rolling. The world of our survivors is continuing to expand as they’re running into new groups and new survivors."

Kang also talked to NME about season 11, and whether they know how things will end:

"We are actively working on season 11. It’s a long season for us, it’s 24 episodes. We keep it at 16 normally! I do have a sense of where it might end but we are working on all of that. We’ll be introducing new communities that are antagonists, sometimes allies. There’s going to be all the human drama that we’ve built up: we’ve got Maggie back, there’s a great Maggie/Negan story that we’re working on. There will be lots to look forward to for our fans who have been following us all of this time!"

Personally? I’m just here for the Maggie/Negan drama — that’s been a long time coming!

What new characters will show up on the final season of The Walking Dead?

If you’ve read The Walking Dead comics, then you’ll have an inkling about what characters might show up in the final season, including the Governor of the Commonwealth, Pamela Milton, Eugene’s apparent love interest Stephanie, Officer Mercer, and more.

Of course, Kang and her team could also go rogue and create completely new characters for the final season. Chances are we’ll have a bit of both, just as we’ve had in past seasons.

For those who don’t know, the Commonwealth is a flourishing community and probably the most advanced of any we’ve seen on the series so far. They even have sporting events and concerts! The Walking Dead season 11 is going to be quite the treat, I tell ya.

While the cast and crew are busy working on The Walking Dead season 11, fans can watch the six additional episodes of season 10 starting this Sunday, February 28 on AMC.
