The Crown, Nomadland, The Queen’s Gambit, Schitt’s Creek, Soul and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm all came away from the Golden Globes happy.

The 2021 Golden Globes Awards have come and gone. Obviously the ceremony was a bit different than usual this year, what with a pandemic on and much of it being conducted remotely, but the hardware still got where it was going.

And where did it go? The big winner of the night was Netflix’s British royal family drama The Crown, which took home several acting awards — for Gillian Anderson, Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor — and the award for Best Drama. On the movie side, the big winner was Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland, about a woman (Frances McDormand) who travels the American west, with Zhao taking home Best Director and the movie winning Best Drama. Disney is probably feeling pretty good about hiring Zhao to direct Eternals, which comes out later this year.

The Queen’s GambitSchitt’s Creek, Pixar’s Soul and Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also fared respectably. The late Chadwick Boseman won the Best Actor in a Drama award for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with his wife Simone giving an emotional acceptance speech in his place.

There wasn’t much sci-fi or fantasy representation in the winner’s circle, save maybe Soul, with The Mandalorian losing the Best Drama award to The CrownStar Wars veteran John Boyega won a Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Limited Series for his work in Small Axe.
