Netflix is set to release a Terminator anime series penned by The Batman and Project Power screenwriter Mattson Tomlin.

It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead… but enough about Netflix, let’s talk The Terminator!

When the Terminator first uttered the three famous words that bear no repeating, it seems the android failed to clarify his return would come on a streaming service near you. That’s right, it’s 2021, the future has been written and Terminator is set for a Netflix redux.

Except, hold the ‘bingo!’ shouts, because this ain’t just any redux. It’s an anime redux. And that bears further exploring. The service recently revealed revealed its plans for the first televised adaptation of the famed franchise, with Mattson Tomlin — the screenwriter behind Matt Reeves’ forthcoming The Batman, as well as Project Power — serving as showrunner.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart,” Tomlin said. “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”

John Derderian, Netflix’s Vice President of Japan & Anime, was equally excited: “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created,” he said, “and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

The series will be co-produced with Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, B: The Beginning), with whom Netflix has had a production deal since 2018. President and CEO Mitsuhisa Ishikawa gave his take: “I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get onboard. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”

There’s no release date as of yet.
