Outlander creator “very optimistic” about spin-off series

Outlander fans can rest assured knowing executive producer Ronald D. Moore is “very optimistic” about future spin-offs.
Outlander season 6 is currently in production after an extremely long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety protocols took a while to put into place, but they’re up and running and the end of the Droughtlander is nigh!
Apart from the highly anticipated sixth season, fans are also eager to hear about potential spin-offs for Starz’s time-traveling romance. It’s been a little over a year since executive producer Ron D. Moore and Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch mentioned Outlander spin-offs, and we want to know if they’re moving forward.
The character of Lord John Grey seems like an especially good candidate for a spin-off, since Outlander author Diana Gabaldon has already penned novellas about him. The fan support is there too, so don’t be surprised if he’s up first.
Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, Moore reassured us that things are in the works:
"Conversations are underway on both season 7 and on a spinoff and I think we’re going to have good news on both those fronts before too long so I feel very optimistic about it. I agree that I would’ve been happy to see [a spinoff] happen sooner than this but everything happens in its time. I think both those things are probably going to happen and hopefully we’ll be able to say something about it before too long."
There are other characters apart from Lord John Grey who could hold down a spin-off series. Murtagh, Jamie’s parents…we have thoughts.
Moore has now handed Outlander showrunner duties to Matthew B. Roberts while he splits his time between For All Mankind on Apple TV+ and developing a new version of Swiss Family Robinson for 20th Television. And since 20th Television is now part of Disney, he could do something that them as well. For instance, Moore hopes one day to make his own Star Wars series. He did begin working on one on Skywalker Ranch with George Lucas, but it never materialized.
Moore created the Battlestar Galactica reboot, so he knows sci-fi. Hopefully we’ll have updates soon on all of his projects, but I’ll be keeping an ear and eye out for Outlander news in particular.
