The CW isn’t wasting any time making sure fans know that Superman & Lois is here to stay. Variety reports that the network has handed the freshman series a second season renewal, and this before a second episode has made it to air. “The phenomenal multiplatform debut of Superman & Lois, which delivered for us in a big way on both a linear and streaming basis, is a testament to the creativity, hard work and dedication of the talented people who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera, especially in this challenging environment” said. CW chairman and CEO mark Pedowitz.

The show jumped from a 1.7 to a 2.7 in the ratings once the Nielsen Live+3 numbers came in, which is pretty significant. The Live+3 numbers are reflective of a number of factors, but it could suggest that word of mouth was positive. Either way, it’s obvious why The CW would want more of this show.

Superman & Lois dives into everyday life through the lens of a super couple

Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent/Superman) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois Lane) bring a down-to-earth feel to the series. Sure, he’s the Man of Steel and she’s an award-winning journalist, but at the end of the day they’re both parents struggling to raise sons Jordan (Alexander Garfin) and Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) in challenging times. The boys are struggling with living in a new place and all the stress that comes with being “the new kids,” not to mention coming to terms with the revelation that their father is Superman.

Lois and Clark’s relatability clearly resonated with fans. The classic elements of a good Superman story are all there, too, along with the first look at a new villain waiting in the wings. The series joins other Greg Berlanti/Todd Helbing superhero series on The CW, but it definitely feels much different than its DCTV peers.

Giving the series an early renewal helps the show build a fanbase. Knowing a show will be around for two seasons helps build viewer confidence, and it allows writers to craft stories with the freedom of knowing that they have more than one season to work with.
