What happens to The Walking Dead after season 11?

The Walking Dead might be coming to an end, but the franchise has a bright future ahead of it, with new spin-offs and the long-awaited Rick Grimes movies. AMC is putting a lot of effort into keeping the franchise moving forward long after the flagship series comes to an end in 2022, so in a sense, the end is just the beginning.

2021 is shaping up to be a big year for TWD fans. Here’s what fans can expect to see from the TWD Universe in 2021 alone:

  • Six bonus episodes of The Walking Dead season 10, which have already started
  • The second part of Fear the Walking Dead season 6
  • The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2, which is the final season
  • The first part of The Walking Dead season 11, the show’s last
  • The first part of Fear the Walking Dead season 7, and possibly all of it

If the schedule holds, barring any kind of COVID-19 disruptions, that’s at least 41 episodes of content to round out 2021. (The number varies slightly depending on how many new episodes of The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead air.)

The future of The Walking Dead after the show ends

Looking ahead to 2022, the rest of The Walking Dead season 11 remains, along with more Fear the Walking Dead, provided that the full season 7 doesn’t air in 2021.

After the original show ends, though, there is more TWD on the horizon with the Carol and Daryl spin-off and Tales of the Walking Dead, an anthology show that will focus on past and present characters. There will also be at least one Rick Grimes movie; the original announcement was that there would be three movies and that they would be released by Universal Pictures, but there have been no recent updates.

What this means is that there is a lot of TWD yet to come even though the show is ending after its eleventh season. AMC is doubling down with zombie apocalypse content and The Walking Dead franchise has a bright future ahead of it.
