The British are known for many things, including their love for Doctor Who and their love for making bets. Express recently provided an update from UK oddsmakers about the top contenders to replace Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor when the time comes, and word is that it’s coming after the upcoming thirteenth season. We don’t know that for sure, but fans know that no Doctor sticks around forever, so it’s never too early to start thinking about the next person to pilot to TARDIS.

Who will be the next Doctor on Doctor Who?

Ladbrokes, one of the top UK oddsmakers, reports that there are three people in the lead for the role. “The odds suggest it might be a three-horse race between Michaela Coel, Kris Marshall and Richard Ayoade to play Doctor Who next,” said Ladbrokes oddsmaker Alex Apati. “But there are a handful of surprising names sitting in and among the frontrunners to replace Jodie Whittaker.”

Kris Marshall, the lovable guy from Love, Actually who went on a quest to find love in America, is currently the frontrunner to replace Whittaker. He and I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel are both sitting on 6/1 odds, while The I.T. Crowd veteran Richard Ayoade is at 7/1.

Other names that have come up include Michael Sheen, Jo Martin, David Jonsson and Jodie Comer.

As the first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker’s casting was a watershed moment for the series, and there’s more pressure than ever in this new era of Doctor Who for her to be followed by someone who also pushes beyond the bounds of where the show has gone before, perhaps by hiring someone from a diverse background.

It won’t be easy to fill Whittaker’s shoes, so let’s hope it’s a while before it’s time for her Doctor to regenerate.
