The Falcon and The Winter Soldier likely won’t have a second season

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is just two weeks away! I know it’s hard to look past this week considering we have the big WandaVision finale tomorrow, but Marvel has a lot of upcoming Disney+ series to get excited about.

In a pre-COVID world, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was supposed to premiere before WandaVision, but the pandemic interrupted things, and the sitcom-loving puzzle box series was first out of the gate. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be a little more traditional, focusing on the two title characters navigating a world where Captain America has retired.

With the end of WandaVision just around the corner, fans are wondering if we’ll ever get another season of the series, and it looks like the answer is no. According to Anthony Mackie, it’s the same for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

That seems to be the case of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as well, according to an interview Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/The Falcon). He confirmed to Variety that there have been no discussions about a second season, and honestly, that doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Marvel has a lot of Disney+ series in the hopper, and while some may stand on their own as unique TV shows with multiple seasons, these early ones are pretty much an extension of the Marvel movies, and will feed back into them. For example, Wanda’s story will continue after WandaVision, but in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, not another season of her show.

What is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier about?

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, an elderly Steven Rogers hands over his Captain America shield to Sam/The Falcon. It looks like the series will explore Sam’s journey as he comes to grips with being the “new” Captain America. Some fans have looked at the image above — of Sam contemplating the shield while a giant image of Steve Rogers looms above him — and theorized that he’ll only really take up the mantle after Steve passes away from old age, and that he’s at Steve’s funeral.

I think that theory makes a lot of sense. Sam wouldn’t just pick up the shield and become Captain America. He’d need a nudge in that direction, and Cap’s passing might just do it.

We’ll also find out more about who Sam Wilson truly is. Unlike some of the other Avengers, the Falcon doesn’t possess innate superhero abilities, just a really cool set of mechanical wings. That makes him one of the more relatable of the heroes, as Marvel uber-boss Kevin Feige explained:

"Sam Wilson as played by Mackie is different than a Thor or a Black Panther because he’s not from another planet or a king from another country. He’s an African American man. He’s got experience in the military and doing grief counseling with soldiers who have PTSD. But where did he grow up? Who is his family? Mackie was excited to dig into it as this man, this Black man in particular, in the Marvel version of the world outside our window."

Who is Sam really? Will he be able to take on Cap’s mantle? Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long to find out the answers to these questions, as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres on Friday, March 19 on Disney+.
