The CW casts its live-action Powerpuff Girls show

This is either brilliant or the worst idea yet conceived by a human being: The CW is making a sequel to the cult superhero cartoon The Powerpuff Girls, about a trio of spunky elementary schoolers who fight crime. Only this one is live-action, and set later in time, so the precocious are now jaded 20-something with emotional baggage left over from their chaotic childhoods. Can they reunite now that the world needs them again?

Hooray…? I can’t decide if this idea is hilarious or terrible, but The CW is going forward with a pilot. And now, Deadline has information on the cast. Meet your new Powerpuff Girls:

 Chloe Bennet as Blossom

Since her crime-fighting days, over-achiever Blossom has earned several advanced degrees, but her repressed childhood trauma has left her feeling anxious and reclusive. Now, she’s looking to become a leader again, but on her own terms.

Dove Cameron as Bubbles

Bubbles’ bright personality still wins people over as an adult, although it belies an unexpected wit and toughness beneath. At first, she’s wants to reunite with his sister to recapture some of her childhood fame rather than to save the world, but ends up surprising herself.

Yana Perrault as Buttercup

Since her superhero days, the rebellious, more-sensitive-than-she-lets-on Buttercup has tried to shed her former identity and live an anonymous life.

The pilot was written by Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, who made a name for herself with movies like Juno and Jennifer’s Body. Those movies explored youth with a lot of irony and wit, so I’m give The CW the benefit of the doubt and assume they know what they’re doing here.
