Game of Thrones executive producer Vince Gerardis is developing something new simply called “A Song of Ice and Fire.” Is it a new adaptation? A live event? Something else? Let’s take a closer look.
We’ve heard a lot lately about new Game of Thrones shows coming to HBO. We know that House of the Dragon is on the way. And there have been rumblings about a show based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg as well as one depicting the events of Robert’s Rebellion. And in the meantime, there’s a lot of buzz around Martin himself. He’ll be adapting the Roger Zelazny novel Roadmarks for HBO, and two of his stories — In the Lost Lands and Sandkings — are getting the movie treatment.
All of these shows and movies are being developed in part by Startling Inc., a company set up by Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon executive producer Vince Gerardis, who works with a lot of Martin’s properties. And a glance at the company’s website catalogs yet more Martin-related projects in development, including a Wild Cards show “with UCP & Peacock” and The Ice Dragon, a story Warner Bros. is making into an animated movie.
And there are more intriguing items on there. For instance, what to make of the entry for “A Song of Ice and Fire,” which is apparently being developed with a company called “The Works”?
This entry was noticed by Westeros.org last month. They reported on it before the news about Sandkings coming to Netflix officially broke, and yet there Sandkings was already listed as being in development on the webpage. So this means something.
But what? What exactly is “A Song of Ice and Fire with The Works”? Well, it’s possible that’s it’s a codename of sorts for one of the other Game of Thrones projects we’ve heard is on the way. Maybe it’s actually the Robert’s Rebellion show or the Dunk and Egg show. Or maybe it’s the Game of Thrones animated drama, which we know very little about other than that it exists.
In fact, let’s go full tin foil for a second and assume it’s that last one. Is “A Song of Ice and Fire” just a placeholder for something more specific, or might this upcoming animated drama actually adapt A Song of Ice and Fire, giving an animated spin on what HBO already rendered in live-action? That could give them a chance to include details dropped from the original show, and to maybe give us an ending more in line with whatever Martin eventually writes.
It’s interesting that, according to Startling, “A Song of Ice and Fire” is being made with just “The Works” with no mention of HBO. Does this mean whatever this is won’t air on HBO?
That’s doubtful, considering that the network has the rights to pretty much everything Westeros all snapped up. The Works may just be some as-yet-unannounced production company that will make the series for HBO.
However, Westeros.org also suggests the possibility that “A Song of Ice and Fire” could be some kind of live event, since there is a company called The Works Entertainment that specializes in that sort of thing. Game of Thrones On Ice, anyone?
But that’s sorta seems unlikely too, since it’s hard to believe HBO left those rights unclaimed. As of right now, this is an intriguing mystery that we’ll keep an eye on.
