When you’re the richest man in the world you can do whatever you like when it comes to your company title. So says Elon Musk, who recently rechristened himself as the “Technoking of Tesla,” per The New York Post. Meanwhile, the company’s Chief Financial Officer Zach Kirkhorn is now the “Master of Coin.”
Game of Thrones fans will recognize the Master of Coin as the member of the Small Council in charge of presiding over the royal treasury in Westeros, a position held by Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, Tyrion Lannister and finally Bronn of the Blackwater. It’s a fitting title for an executive at one of the most influential companies on the planet. Plus, who wouldn’t want to have “Master of Coin” on a business card?
New Tesla titles reflect the company’s unique position
Though the new titles might not change Musk and Kirkhorn’s responsibilities within the company, they are reflective of Musk’s spirited personality and desire to shake things up. A brilliant inventor and entrepreneur, Musk has been battling Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for the title of the richest person in the world. Musk overtook Bezos in January, then Bezos reclaimed the title in February and now in March it seems that Musk’s trading acumen has put him back on top by about a million dollars.
If you’re wondering whether this is a publicity stunt on Musk’s part, it’s not. Musk filed paperwork to change the titles with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which makes the new titles official even though they’re a bit unconventional.
Musk has been busy lately with several big projects with SpaceX and the Boring Company, which has been working on an underground transportation loop beneath Las Vegas. He’s also been sending investors into a frenzy with tweets about bitcoin and NFTs, thus proving that he’s deserving of the Technoking title.
