First official look at Rosamund Pike as Moiraine in The Wheel of Time show

Amazon has been releasing little snippets of its upcoming adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s epic The Wheel of Time series, and we just got our biggest one yet: an official look at Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, a powerful Aes Sedai sorceress from the White Tower and a huge player in this story, especially early on:

So far, the biggest thing we’ve gotten is a line of dialogue from (I think) Mat Cauthon, played by Barney Harris. This is the first time we’ve actually seen one of the actors in full hair and makeup, so it’s a nice step up. Could a full trailer be far behind?

As for what Moiraine is doing in this clip, it’s hard to say. Something magical. She’s part of a powerful order or female magic-users called the Aes Sedai. At the start of the story, she visits the sleepy Two Rivers region, where our main characters live, and whisks them away on a grand journey that lasts 14 books.

Who is Moiraine in The Wheel of Time, and who are the Aes Sedai?

Aes Sedai can wield the One Power, a magical source of energy. Once upon a time, men could use it as well, but they’ve long since been cut off by a catastrophe that happened eons ago. Characters from the Two Rivers like Mat and Rand al’Thor have trouble trusting Aes Sedai, as they have a fearsome reputation. As Moiraine intimates in that clip, that reputation isn’t entirely unearned, but Moiraine at least usually tries to do the right thing.

Moiraine’s line here is interesting. “Do not underestimate the women in this tower.” She’s more than likely talking about the White Tower, the home base of the Aes Sedai. We don’t actually see the White Tower in the first Wheel of Time book, The Eye of the World. Does this mean the first season will also get into the second book, The Great Hunt? Or maybe we’ll have a flashback…or a flash-forward?

We’ll wait and see. At the moment, signs are good that we’ll be watching The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video by the end of the year, although we don’t have a firm release date yet.

Next. Robert Jordan had “a different twist on the ending” of The Wheel of Time in mind. dark
