Ava DuVernay’s Arrowverse series, Naomi, casts lead role
By Ariba Bhuvad
Last year it was announced that Selma and A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay was teaming with Arrow writer/co-executive producer Jill Blankenship on a new Arrowverse show, Naomi. The story follows the titular character, who’s living in a small Northwestern town with her adopted family. One day, Superman and Mongul happen to fight through her town, and gets Naomi thinking about the last time a superhero stumbled into her home and what it might mean about her own origins.
Naomi will connect to the rest of the Arrowverse, which now includes Stargirl, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Batwoman, Superman & Lois, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. And who will be playing Naomi herself? According to Deadline, The CW has settled on Kaci Walfall, who played Nala in The Lion King on Broadway).
The cast of Ava DuVernay’s Naomi is coming together
Joining Walfall will be Alexander Wraith (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Cranston Johnson (P-Valley) and newcomer Camila Moreno. Wraith will play a local tattoo shop owner named Dee who is hanging onto a secret. Johnson plays a used car dealer named Zumbado with a murky past, and Moreno plays Lourdes, “a young woman with a sarcastic sense of humor who works in a vintage collectibles shop.”
It sounds like there may be a potential romance between Lourdes and Naomi, as Lourdes harbors a huge crush on our lead character. The two both love comics, which may be key to learning more about Naomi’s past, breaking open the secrets of the multiverse, and coming together.
Naomi doesn’t have a premiere date as of yet, but there will be room with both Supergirl and Black Lightning airing their final seasons this year.
It looks like the new age of DCTV is here, and they’re younger and fiercer than ever!
