Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins elaborated on what’s in store for Avatar Studios and how the division will expand The Last Airbender universe.

Following the show’s arrival on Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender saw a resurgence in popularity. With the show riding a new wave of interest, Nickelodeon announced last month that it would dive further into that world with Avatar Studios, a new division focused exclusively on releasing Avatar content and headed up by original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

When the news first broke, it wasn’t clear what exactly Avatar Studios had planned, although we did know that a new animated movie was in the works. Now, more details are coming to light.

Speaking with Deadline, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins elaborated on what’s in store for the new division. “We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe,” he said. “Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.”

Robbins didn’t reveal what the new shows and films might cover, but The Last Airbender has a plethora of history and lore to explore. It’s already ventured into the future with The Legend of Korra, but it’s possible the new content from Avatar Studios could take fans into the past, looking at the lives of Avatars before Aang.

Robbins also suggested that most Avatar Studios projects, if not all of them, will remain under the ViacomCBS umbrella. Netflix is at work on a live-action remake of the original show — a deal struck before the creation of Avatar Studios — but fans can expect this new new content to be available on Paramount+ or Nickelodeon.
