The Batman is one step closer to taking flight now that principal filming has wrapped on the highly anticipated Matt Reeves film that will see Robert Pattinson donning the cape and cowl. Nerdist has been following all of The Batman news and moves. According to a tweet from Reeves, filming ended on March 13. Now begins the long post-production process.

If not for the pandemic, fans would have been getting ready to see The Batman in theaters in 2021. Filming continued in 2020 until production had to shut down when Pattinson contracted COVID-19, leading to more delays. The release date was bumped to 2021 out of an abundance of caution.

What you need to know about The Batman

Before the existence of Zack Snyder’s Justice League was ever confirmed, there were plans for Ben Affleck to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne in a standalone Batman movie. When Affleck dropped out of the project, Pattinson stepped in.

This movie will not be part of the DCEU, so it won’t align with the story set up in the Snyder Cut, nor will it link to other DCEU movies like Wonder Woman, Aquaman or The Flash. This movie will have its own timeline and its own set of villains.

In addition to Pattinson’s Batman, Andy Serkis will play Alfred and Jeffrey Wright Commissioner Gordon. They will be joined by Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, and John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone. Peter Sarsgaard has also been cast in the movie but his role hasn’t been announced.

That’s a lot of big names playing a lot of key roles in the Batman universe. This gritty, dark version of the Dark Knight might not be DCEU canon, but it’s shaping up to be something special all the same.

Batwoman returns…but not played by Ruby Rose

In other Bat news, TV Line reports that Kate Kane will be returning to Batwoman. If you’re not caught up on this story, Kate Kane used to be the main character of The CW show, but star Ruby Rose opted to leave after the first season. She was replaced by actor Javicia Leslie, who’s playing a new character, Ryan Wilder.

The kicker is that while Kate is coming back — she was found badly bandaged in the sewers in the latest episode — she won’t be played by Rose. “Wallis Day is going to be playing our altered version of Kate Kane, and she’s an amazing actress,” said showrunner Caroline Dries. “I’m excited for you guys to see the journey that she endures.”

Incidentally, Ruby Rose said she would return as Kate Kane, but obviously that’s not gonna happen.
