Marvel already developing a spin-off for upcoming Hawkeye show
By Dan Selcke
Hawkeye is one of six Marvel shows we’re getting this year, and Disney is already a developing a spin-off about a character we haven’t yet seen onscreen.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has officially made the jump to TV. WandaVision was a big success, and based on the numbers, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is on its way to being even more popular: apparently the first episode was the most-watched series premiere of a Disney+ shot so far.
And this is just the beginning, people. This year alone, Disney+ still has to show us Loki, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye and What If…? Beyond that, we’ve got Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Ironheart and Armor Wars all coming down the pike.
But if you thought that would be enough to satisfy Disney’s content creation instinct, you’d be wrong. Variety reports that Marvel is already developing a spin-off for Hawkeye, which is expected to bow late this year. The new show would be about Echo, aka Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American girl who can perfectly mimic another person’s movements.
On Hawkeye, Echo will be played by newcomer Alaqua Cox, who will join a cast that includes Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Hailee Steinfeld (his protege Kate Bishop), Vera Farmiga (Eleanor Bishop, Kate’s mom), Tony Dalton (Jack Duquesne), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova, one of Black Widow’s colleagues) and Zahn McClarnon (William Lopez, Echo’s father).
We don’t know if the Echo show will end up moving forward, but that it’s in development at all goes to show just how seriously Disney and Marvel are taking this televised expansion of the MCU. Although, a caveat we could add is that many of the Marvel shows we’re watching now — WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier both seem to fall into this category — were designed to be one-offs, so they’re getting future seasons. Marvel will want something to plug the hole where those future seasons would have been.
What do you think? Is it too early to get excited for a spin-off to a show we haven’t even seen yet, or is more Marvel content never a bad thing?
