When you need a villain to take down an all-powerful superhero like Shazam, there’s only one person to call: Dame Helen Mirren.

Fifty years ago in 2019, Warner Bros. released Shazam!, a more light-hearted take on the DC Extended Universe of movies. It was a hit, and a sequel, Fury of the Gods, was greenlit soon afterwards.

Now, The Wrap brings us the news that none other than Oscar-winner Dame Helen Mirren will play a villain: Hespera, the daughter of Atlas. Hespera doesn’t have a clear counterpart in the comics, but her appearance may be linked to the origin of the word “Shazam.” When young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) wishes to turn into the all-powerful hero (Zachary Levi), he simply says this word and is granted the “wisdom of Solomon,” the “strength of Hercules,” the “stamina of Atlas,” the “power of Zeus,” the “courage of Achilles,” and the “speed of Mercury.”

So maybe Hespera is here to challenge Shazam to a stamina contest? Honestly, I don’t know who I’d bet on.

In addition to the sequel, Warner Bros. is also working on a movie about Black Adam, another Shazam villain. He’ll be played by Dwayne Johnson and I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up in Fury of the Gods, which lands in theaters on June 2, 2023. If you need to get your Helen Mirren fix before then, she’ll be returning as Queenie in Fast & Furious 9, aka F9, on June 25 of this year.
