20. Davos Seaworth and Stannis Baratheon

What happened to the duo: Things certainly went south after Davos learned of Stannis’ actions against Shireen. However, Stannis was already dead at this point in the story, so Davos aimed his anger at Melisandre.

Why they were so great: For a long time, these two were one of the best duos on the show. Davos was there by Stannis’ side to fight the Lannisters after the death of Robert Baratheon. Despite some of the dark, scary, and magical things he did to win the war, including having Melisandre birth a shadow baby to murder his own brother Renly, Davos didn’t judge Stannis too harshly.

At the same time, Stannis didn’t hold Davos’ low birth and criminal past against him. Davos was born in Flea Bottom and became a smuggler; most nobles like Stannis wouldn’t give him a second look. But Davos helped Stannis during Robert’s Rebellion, and Stannis saw his value. Eventually, Stannis even made Davos his Hand of the King.

Before Shireen’s death, it was impossible to see Stannis and Davos breaking up. And because Stannis died, we never had to see it happen.
