Disney is making a whole lotta new Star Wars TV shows, including Ahsoka Tano, Rangers of the New Republic, a show about Cassian Andor, a show about Lando Calrissian, and many more. One of the most exciting projects is Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It will follow the titular character, once again played by Ewan McGregor, during his exile on Tatooine. He’ll be meeting up with some old friends/mortal enemies, including Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader.
Now, Disney has announced that Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will be returning as Owen Lars and Beru Lars, aka Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, the couple who raised a young Luke Skywalker after Obi-Wan delivered him at the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. (In the original Star Wars movie, the roles were played by Phil Brown and Shelagh Fraser.)
Since Revenge of the Sith, Edgerton has gone on to no small success, appearing in movies like Zero Dark Thirty, The Great Gatsby and The King. Piesse has had a quieter career, but it will be cool to see them both back in these roles.
Kumail Nanjiani and others join the cast of Obi-Wan Kenobi
And they’ll be joined by an impressive cast. Check out the full roster:
We already mentioned the return of McGregor and Christensen. We’d also heard before that Game of Thrones veteran Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) would be joining the cast, although we don’t know who she’s playing. The other newcomers include Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.
Nanjiani is probably the biggest new name to be announced. The Big Sick and Silicon Valley star is best known for his comedy roles, but he’s also been cast in Marvel’s upcoming Eternals movie, so he has the range. Also he’s completely ripped now, so maybe the show will make use of that.
We don’t have an exact release date for Obi-Wan Kenobi yet, but filming begins in April, so things are moving along!
