The Saw franchise will never die. Thanks to a fresh new infusion of energy from Chris Rock, the trailer for Spiral: From the Book of Saw looks terrifying. The Saw-inspired movie has all of the elements fans loved from the original series of movies along with a new villain, new faces and some throwbacks to dear old Jigsaw.

Spiral was supposed to arrive in 2020 but was pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic. The new release date is May 14, in time to give the summer box office a much-needed dose of adrenaline.

The movie stars Rock as Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks. When a new killer comes on the scene, Zeke knows that something isn’t right with the clues being left behind. Though Jigsaw is definitely dead, the clues point to more than just a copycat killer. This is a whole new ballgame.

Joining Rock on this journey down a bloody rabbit hole is Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Zeke’s father Marcus, a former police officer himself. Throughout the trailer, Zeke is asked about the last time he saw his father, and at the end of the clip Jackson can be seen suspended like a marionette in one of Spiral’s complicated mousetraps.

The trailer doesn’t hold back from revealing tension between Zeke and the police force. He admits at one point that he doesn’t know who can be trusted among the other offices, reflecting the tension happening in police departments across the country.

Rock pitched the idea for this movie to Lionsgate during a friend’s wedding in hopes of giving new life to the franchise, hoping to take things in a David Fincher, Se7en-ish direction. He also brings humor to the dark story, which is refreshing and needed given how heavy things tend to be in Saw films.

Whether this is a one-time spinoff or the start of a new run for the franchise, Spiral: From the Book of Saw will no doubt have audiences talking when it debuts in May.
