ThunderCats, ho! A new ThunderCats movie is in the works from Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard, who has been thinking about it for a very long time. The director spoke with Deadline about his plans to bring an animated and CGI hybrid version of the beloved franchise to life.

Between his love for the series and his moviemaking skillset, Wingard is the perfect person for this project. “My real obsession with ThunderCats came in high school, the pinnacle of me deciding I wanted to be a filmmaker, and pushing in that direction,” he said. “I actually spent most of my 10th grade year, I completely blew it. I didn’t pay attention in school, made terrible grades. And the reason? I was writing my ThunderCats screenplay through my entire 10th grade year. And I was hand-writing it. The screenplay itself ended up being 272 pages long.”

Now that he has a chance of bringing this story to the screen, he’s eager to dispel the idea that it will be like the failed Cats movie that has been the butt of jokes since it came out in 2019. This will be something entirely different.

ThunderCats movie will spin out of the animated series

The ThunderCats are a group of feline warriors who flee their home planet of Thundera for Third Earth, where they build a life for themselves. Leader Lion-O is young but brave, and a magical sword gives him special powers. Their nemesis is Mumm-Ra, a (you guessed it) mummy who wants the power of the sword for himself.

There have been multiple resurrections of the Rankin-Bass animated series over the years, but nothing truly compares to the original 1980s version that started it all. “It’s got a rich mythology; the characters are fantastic,” Wingard said. “The colors. I want to do a ThunderCats film that takes you back to that ‘80s aesthetic.”

The 1980s vibe could play very well for Generation X and Millennials who grew up watching the series, along with fans of shows like Stranger Things who enjoy taking a trip to the past with some fun retro action.

There’s no word on when the project is expected in theaters, but it sounds like it won’t take long for Wingard to get the script in working order since he’s been working on it for decades…
