Neil Gaiman says American Gods is “definitely not dead”

Starz cancelled American Gods earlier this week, but if author Neil Gaiman can be believed, it’s too early to give up hope just yet.

It came out earlier this week that Starz had cancelled American Gods, which may have been inevitable given how much trouble the show endured behind the scenes. It was doubly disappointing because the recent third season was the best yet, and ended with many questions left unanswered.

Fans took to social media to express their heartbreak over the news, but all hope isn’t lost, at least according to American Gods author Neil Gaiman. He responded to one fan’s tweet that suggested he and Netflix team up together to finish the story of American Gods since they’re already working together on an adaptation of Gaiman’s graphic novel The Sandman. It’s not a bad idea, to be honest!

In response to the tweet, Gaiman said that American Gods is “definitely not dead” and that the folks who make the series, Fremantle, “are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1.”

It’s unclear if Gaiman’s intentions are to continue the story with another full season somewhere or to give it a proper ending by means of a TV movie finale, similar to what happened with Timeless after it was cancelled by NBC. In the age where streaming services are reviving shows all over the place, it’s not a crazy thought.

Whatever happens, it looks like there’s reason yet for American Gods fans to hope. Gods willing, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and the rest of the cast.
