Suicide Squad director David Ayer says his original cut was “amazing”

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is just around the corner. It promises to be a fun and thrilling affair that brings some of DC’s most despicable and hilarious characters together in one team.

The movie is something of a reboot for David Ayer’s 2016 movies Suicide Squad, which was panned across the board (although it still made $746 million at the box office). But in the wake of the successful release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Ayer himself is urging Warner Bros. to #ReleaseTheAyerCut of his movie in the hope that lightening could strike twice.

First and foremost: Will Ayer’s Suicide Squad get the same treatment as Zack Snyder’s Justice League? Probably not, or at least that’s what WarnerMedia exec Ann Sarnoff said earlier this month.

After Zack Snyder’s Justice League, David Ayer wants Warner Bros. to release his cut of Suicide Squad

Ayer wants a redux for his movie because his vision was radically changed in post-production. For instance, the director has previously said they shot a lot of scenes with Jared Leto’s Joker that didn’t show up in the final product. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ayer said he understands what happened from a business standpoint but nevertheless continued to express his annoyance at the alterations that changed the tone of his film. “It’s frustrating because I made a really heartfelt drama and it got ripped to pieces and they tried to turn it into Deadpool, which it just wasn’t supposed to be,” he said. “Even though it didn’t represent what I actually made, I would take all the bullets and be a good soldier. I made an amazing movie. It’s an amazing movie, it just scared the s*** out of the executives.”

"I think the studios see now that there can be canon, there can be non-canon, the fans just want to touch it. They love the characters; they just want to spend more time with it. And people are way more sophisticated about how movies are made and want to be participants in the journey. There’s room for different things, different versions, different assets being shared with the audience. I think it just helps strengthen the community."

Perhaps Zack Snyder’s Justice League is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to studios releasing different cuts of movies. I hope this doesn’t mean we’ll only get them if the internet makes it into a huge trend because they didn’t like the original…but it might be the only way.

It’s a shame we’ll never get to see Ayer’s full vision. I would be interested in watching it. At least we have The Suicide Squad coming up, which sees James Gunn take the comedy aspect and run with it. The official trailer was recently unveiled and it looks just as crazy as you would expect from Gunn, the guy behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

The Suicide Squad premieres in movie theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
