Iron Anniversary: HBO celebrates 10 years since the debut of Game of Thrones
By Dan Selcke
To celebrate 10 years since the debut of Game of Thrones, HBO brings us lots of new merch, a spotlight page of HBO Max, charity efforts, and more!
Traditionally, the 10-year anniversary is celebrated with gifts of tin. But I think we can all agree that this is cooler: to mark 10 years since the debut of Game of Thrones, HBO is highlighting the show as part of what it calls the Iron Anniversary.
So what exactly is HBO doing to mark its decade-long commitment to George R.R. Martin’s story? Let’s run down the ways:
- HBO Max now has a Game of Thrones Spotlight Page that features both introductions to the world and characters for newbies and “spoiler-laden curations featuring easter eggs” for diehards. There’s over 150 behind-the-scenes videos, cast interviews, clips and trailers, some of which have never been available on HBO Max before.
- On April 10, HBO2 will start airing all 73 episodes of the series starting at 10:00 a.m. EST. They’re calling it the MaraThrone. (Geddit?) Select superfans will get “a custom MaraThrone kit” to help spice up the viewings, and there will be six unique marathon “routes” for those who want to experience the series in a new way.
- For two weeks, Game of Thrones cast members will rally the fandom to contribute to good causes, including Women for Women International, World Central Kitchen, Conservation International, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), UNICEF, FilmAid International, SameYou, the Royal Mencap Society, the National Urban League and The Trevor Project.
- HBO will surprise three couples who were married in Westeros-themed ceremonies with special anniversary gifts, including Game of Thrones-branded barrels of wine, custom chalices, and cakes inspired by Houses Targaryen, Stark and Lannister.
- There’s also some merch coming, including a stupid-expensive Fabergé egg modeled after Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon eggs, co-designed by series costume designer Michele Clapton.
- Danish craft bear company Mikkeller have launched a range of beers inspired by the series, starting with the “Iron Anniversary IPA.”
- New Game of Thrones Funko Pop! figures are coming.
Not bad for an anniversary celebration.
We serving up lots of Game of Thrones content this month as well. Happy anniversary, Game of Thrones!
