The third Guardians of the Galaxy movie was thrown for a loop when director James Gunn left (and eventually rejoined) the project but it now looks like the threequel is moving ahead. Gunn shared as much on his Twitter, saying simply that the movie would begin filming “this year.”
He also did a swell job of hyping it up. “Out designers & visual development geniuses are busy creating new fantastic designs of other worlds & alien beings. I’m not sure the galaxy if big enough for all this magic,” he wrote. “This. One. Is. huge. I’m excited.”
Gunn has been in the spotlight a lot lately, but not for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. His next big project is The Suicide Squad, which he made during his brief exile from Marvel. Coming out on August 6, The Suicide Squad promises to be a hilarious, thrilling adventure with some of DC’s most despicable villains banding together, including Harley Quinn, Peacemaker, King Shark and Polka-Dot Man. It’s sure to be a wild ride.
What else will the Guardians be in while we wait for Vol. 3?
But the Guardians movies are what many know Gunn for, and it will be great to see Gunn back behind the wheel of a new film. With the number of teasers and trailers Marvel Studios has been releasing lately — from Black Widow to Loki — one wonders if we’ll see something Guardians-related soon.
Unfortunately, the reality is that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t come out until sometime in 2023. That’s a long wait. In the meantime, the cosmic group of misfits at the center of the story — Star-Lord, Rocket, Gamora and the rest — will appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will premiere in December 2022. And of course, as teased at the end of Avengers: Endgame, they’ll also be in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is out on May 6, 2022.
So although a proper Guardians adventure is a ways off, they’ll be lots to enjoy while we wait.
