Harrison Ford and John Williams return for the fifth Indiana Jones movie, with Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge nabbing the role of the female lead.
The first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Arc, came out way back in 1981, a full 40 years ago. Did anyone involved think they would still be making movies four decades later, with Harrison Ford still starring as the whip-cracking tomb-diving protagonist, no less? Well, it’s happening, with Deadline reporting that Fleabag star (and creator, and writer) Phoebe Waller-Bridge in the role of the female lead.
We don’t know who she’s playing, what the story is, or even what the full title is — Indiana Jones 5 will have to do for now. We do know that iconic composer John Williams is returning to write the music for the new movie, and that Logan director James Mangold will be behind the camera. Franchise originator Steven Spielberg was originally going to direct but eventually passed on the reins, although he remains involved as a producer.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge has exploded over the past few years. Fleabag was a critically acclaimed hit that swept the Emmys. She also earned plaudits for her work writing Killing Eve, and made contributions to the script for the upcoming James Bond movie No Time to Die. Toss in a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live and a starring role in the new Indiana Jones movie and you have quite the meteoric rise.
Indiana Jones and the Forthcoming Subtitle is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
