Domhnall Gleeson (Hux) deflects Rise of Skywalker criticisms

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came out back in 2019, ending the Star Wars sequel trilogy on a divisive note. Some fans loved the J.J. Abrams-directed three-quel, while others criticized it harshly, whether it was for walking back the developments of The Last Jedi, committing to them too much, or in general being kind of incoherent.

Speaking to IndieWire, actor Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux) responded to some of those criticisms. “The film is what the film needed to be, I think,” he said. “There’s always stuff that you would like to see more of, but you can’t have a 17-hour film, I’ve been told. Apparently that’s not allowed, so I was happy with what was there.”

Maybe not a 17-hour film, but I’m sure Zack Snyder’s Justice League could give filmmakers some ideas where movie length is concerned.

And what would fans have liked to see more of? Well, there’s Hux, for one. His character was kind of unceremoniously killed off by a newcomer, which seemed like a bit of waste. But Gleeson has no qualms about it. “It would’ve been nice to stick around a little bit longer, for sure,” he said. “It would’ve been nice to see the spy thing play out a little bit, but J.J. [Abrams] knows what he’s doing, and I heard a kind of gasp in the cinema when it happened, so I guess he was right.”

The Star Wars universe has moved on since The Rise of Skywalker. The Mandalorian has been a hit on Disney+, and Disney has a lot more sequels and spin-offs where that came from, including shows about Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and one about Cassian Andor, Diego Luna’s character from Rogue One.

Word is that this series will be a sort of spy drama, as Cassian Andor uses cloak and dagger techniques in service to the Rebellion. Some leaked set pics make it look like we’ll be returning to Canto Bight, the casino city Rose and Finn visited in The Last Jedi. Seems like a good place for a spy drama.

Expect Andor, as the show is called, to stream on Disney+ sometime in 2022.

The final Star Wars project George Lucas was involved with may be coming to Disney+

Finally, as long as we’re talking Star Wars news, The Vulcan Reporter has it that Disney is planning to release an animated Star Wars sitcom called Star Wars Detours on May 4, Star Wars Day. Originally announced back in 2012, this series came from Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich in cooperation with George Lucas, which technically makes it the last Star Wars project he was personally involved with. But it was shelved when Disney bought Lucasfilm that same year. As Green explained in a Reddit AMA in 2013, the team “didn’t think it made any sense, in anticipation of these new movies coming out, to spend the next 3 years with an animated sitcom as 3 generations’ of kids first introduction to the Star Wars universe.”
