Fear the Walking Dead has officially returned for the second half of season 6 and we’ve already been presented with a massive, unexpected twist. Beware SPOILERS ahead!

During episode 8, “The Door,” John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt) realized it was Virginia’s sister Dakota (Zoe Colletti) who killed Cameron (Noah Khyle) a few episodes back.  kill off fan-favorite gunslinger and all-round good guy John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt). Dakota shoots him in the chest, leaving him to die and eventually turn into a walker. John was a fan favorite character and one of the few good guys left in this world, so his death came as a heartbreaking shock, proving yet again that nobody is safe.

Unlike a lot of Walking Dead actors, Dorie’s death didn’t come as a shock to him. Want”I don’t remember exactly when, but it’s something we’d been talking about since season 5,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “And then we had a lot of conversations between 5 and 6 about how John would exit. And they came up with this great idea – great, and tragic, and wonderful, and believable in this world for how to get him off the show. And, at the same time, propel the story forward.”

"I can’t imagine what goes into logistically planning these series. There are so many moving parts, there are so many people involved. It’s a feat of almost engineering for these showrunners, and [Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple], and the writers to navigate all the obstacles in general, putting a TV show on, let alone the needs of their actors. I just feel very fortunate that they were willing to hear it, and consider it, and then come up with a great idea that made everybody happy."

Recalling his final day on set, Dorie remembers feeling, “sweet and sad…bittersweet.” Despite wanting to leave the show and move onto other projects, he remains extremely grateful, saying he was “honored to play” John, and he’ll “always cherish” the opportunity.

I’m sure fans are thankful for his portrayal. The official Fear the Walking Dead Twitter account shared their appreciation with this awesome tribute video:

The 56-year-old actor is already moving onto other projects, including an adaptation of Delia Owens’ novel Where the Crawdads Sing, as confirmed recently by Deadline.

In other news, the seventh season of Fear the Walking Dead is officially filming! There’s no word on how many episodes it will contain, nor if it will be the final season. One thing we do know is it’s unlikely to feature any crossovers with The Walking Dead.

While we don’t have an official release date yet, the season is expected to air later this year. In the meantime, Fear The Walking Dead season 6 continues Sundays on AMC.
