As the Star Wars universe continues to expand, it’s not surprising that the cast and crew of one show or movie want to be part of another. For instance, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would love to direct an episode of The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV show.

Author Sariah Wilson revealed on Twitter that she had asked Johnson if he’d ever step behind the camera on The Mandalorian. He’s more than game and has actually already talked to The Mandalorian showrunner Dave Filoni about it, but everything boils down to his schedule, which is very full.

Rian Johnson visited The Mandalorian set in season 1

Though Star Wars sets are always kept under lock and key to protect big secrets and plot twists, Johnson was able to visit the set of The Mandalorian in season 1 and was even granted a glimpse of the Child, aka Baby Yoda, long before the character’s big reveal.

As much as Johnson would love to direct an episode of The Mandalorian, he’s pretty busy these days, between working on a pair of Knives Out movies for Netflix in addition to preparing to return to that galaxy far, far away with a trilogy of Star Wars movies of his own; we haven’t had updates on that in a while but apparently it’s still happening.

Johnson’s schedule might be pretty packed, but there’s every reason to believe that if he can carve out the time, he’ll jump on a chance to direct The Mandalorian. Not only would it be a fun experience for him as a fan, but spending more time in the Star Wars universe could help him as he plans for his trilogy.

On the other hand, given his suddenly packed schedule it’s possible that Johnson, like Games of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, might have to leave his Star Wars trilogy behind to focus on Knives Out, which makes directing an episode of The Mandalorian all the more tempting.

The Mandalorian’s season 3 premiere date has not been revealed yet, but the first two seasons are available to stream on Disney+.
