Rick Grimes won’t make any surprise appearances in the second season of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, but TWD chief content officer Scott M. Gimple told viewers on the TWDU Twitch channel that it’s entirely possible we could see some “familiar faces” when World Beyond returns.

“We might see familiar faces pop up, it’s possible,” Gimple said. “It’s about growing up. This is a two-season show, so these kids have been through a very intense experience where they have to grow up very fast, and we see these characters change quite a bit over the course of these ten episodes.”

Could Fear the Walking Dead’s Madison Clark be one of the “familiar faces” on The Walking Dead: World Beyond?

World Beyond follows a group of young people who leave their community behind to rescue one of their own. Sisters Hope and Iris know their father is in danger and they set out to help him, but they’ve never known what life was like outside the relative safety of their community. In season 2, the final season of the limited series, the group will be confronted with some of the hardest decisions they’ll ever have to make.

It makes perfect sense that there would be some crossover between Walking Dead spin-offs Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond. The nefarious Civic Republic Military (CRM) has appeared on all three shows. The CRM took Rick away in The Walking Dead season 9, and Althea met one of the CRM pilots in Fear the Walking Dead season 5.

The CRM’s reach is impressive. Thanks to their network of helicopters and bases, they can fly anywhere. They’ve been going from New York to Oregon (until they destroyed the colony there) and to Campus Colony (until they burned that one down, too), and the helicopters have been seen in Texas and near Alexandria. That makes it possible for characters to cross over from The Walking Dead flagship series (see Heath, who disappeared in season 7) or even from Fear the Walking Dead.

The most intriguing possibility is that Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), the matriarch of the Clark family who “died” in Fear the Walking Dead season 4, could make the jump to World Beyond. Her body was never found after the fire in the ballpark, and if the CRM picked her up and whisked her off to one of their communities it could explain why she never came back.

Like Rick, who would do anything to get back to his family, Madison would try to get back to Alicia and Nick. (She doesn’t know Nick is dead, just as Rick doesn’t know he has a son.)

Fans have been wondering if AMC is teasing a potential return for Madison through cryptic social media posts. The possibility of her return stretches across Fear the Walking Dead, World Beyond and the upcoming Tales of the Walking Dead. In The Walking Dead Universe, the truth is that anything is possible until you actually see a body.

World Beyond is currently in production and will return later this year.
