The Witcher captivated fans when it debuted on Netflix in 2020. The first season was a big hit for the streaming service, and fans are ready for the second season. The pandemic extended the production schedule, and an on-set injury put star Henry Cavill (Geralt of Rivia) on the sidelines for a period of time, but it looks like fans could still see The Witcher season 2 on Netfilx at some point in 2021.
Netflix revealed a behind-the-scenes video that offers an inside look at filming the upcoming season. It details some of the key plot points, which will adapt the events of Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski’s book Blood of Elves, as well as pick up a few things the first season missed from the books The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.
Despite the delays in filming, The Witcher season 2 seems to be on track for a 2021 release now that filming has wrapped and post-production is underway. High fantasy shows like The Witcher require a great deal of post-production work, including adding special effects, but there is enough time to have the new season available by the end of the year.

The video reveals how difficult it was to film during the pandemic. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich laid out some of the numbers: 89 cast members to wrangle, over 1200 crew members, 15 filming locations and 158 days of filming. In some cases, there were three filming units working at the same time.
One of the challenges the team faced was trying to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak on set while managing so many people. At one point Cavill is seen handing out masks, highlighting the need for safety measures at every level in order to prevent an outbreak that could shut down production.
Cavill will be joined by Freya Allan (Ciri), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) and Joey Batey (Jaskier), along with new faces who will come along for the adventure in season 2.
