HBO’s Perry Mason comes under new management ahead of season 2
By Dan Selcke
The good news is that we’re getting a second season of Perry Mason on HBO! The too-early-to-see news is that the creative team is changing.
Perry Mason, HBO’s revival of the decades-old legal drama, premiered last last summer to critical acclaim and rock-solid viewership numbers. The series stars Matthew Rhys as the TV icon and is set in the 1930s. The first season covered Perry’s time as a detective, but it looks like season 2 will explore his life as a lawyer, bringing the show back in line with its classic predecessors.
For whatever reason, original showrunners Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones are leaving for the second season, and Jack Amiel and Michael Begler are coming in. Amiel and Begler are behind the Showtime series The Knick, a period drama about doctors that also got a lot of great feedback.
Why would HBO replace the showrunners on a series that had a successful first season? I dunno, but it’s happening. As The A.V. Club suggests, maybe HBO just wants to get into the Amiel and Begler business; the two have signed a three-year deal with the network that includes Perry Mason duties. Or maybe Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones had something else they had to get to.
We don’t know when the second season of Perry Mason will air as of yet.
