The Falcon and The Winter Soldier showrunner to write Captain America 4
By Ariba Bhuvad
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney+ ended on a hopeful and inspiring note as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson officially took on the mantle of Captain America. But it also left us with the question: what’s next?
Luckily, we didn’t have to wait very long to find out: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel will be making a fourth Captain America movie, with Falcon and The Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman on board to write it.
That means the Captain America in question will be Sam Wilson, formerly the Falcon. It’s a big moment as we get our first big screen Black Captain America.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did a great job of exploring social issues surrounding race and selling us on Sam’s journey to accepting his new role. I can’t wait to see that journey continue in Captain America 4.
Will Captain America 4 pick up right after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?
Details are scarce regarding the plot or cast for the fourth film. We’re not sure who is returning from the series (or from elsewhere in the MCU) or what new characters will be added to the mix.
It seems probable that Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), and Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent) will all be a part of it. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier also shocked viewers by introducing Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, aka Madame Hydra, who’s putting together some kind of anti-Avengers team.
Fun fact: To keep this secret, they had Louis-Dreyfus sneak onto set incognito wearing a hooded cloak:
Then there’s Sharon Carter, who seems to have defected from the good guys. She got pardoned in the final few minutes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and took a high-ranking job in the government, which she intends to use to sell secrets in her role as the Power Broker.
Just as the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel will pick up from WandaVision, Captain America 4 will likely continue the story started in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This sort of thing is going to become the MCU norm, but since we haven’t seen it happen yet, it’s unclear if it will work out as they are intending it to.
But if the Disney+ shows are any indication, we won’t have much to worry about. After all, both WandaVision and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier had no issues seamlessly incorporating the events of the prior films. Hopefully the same will be true going the other way!
Captain America 4 does not yet have a release date or a director, so stay tuned!
